The calculated code is an automatic computation under the official rules: the legally valid codice fiscale is issued only by the Agenzia delle Entrate.

How does the codice fiscale calculation work?

The rules are set by the Italian Ministerial Decree of 12 March 1974. The 16 characters are composed as follows: three letters from the surname (consonants first, then vowels, then X), three from the first name (with a special rule when the name has four or more consonants), the last two digits of the birth year, one letter for the birth month from an official table, the day of birth (plus 40 for women), the four-character Belfiore code of the place of birth, and a final check character computed from the previous fifteen.

A concrete example: Mario Rossi, born on 1 January 1980 in Rome, has the code RSSMRA80A01H501U — RSS from the surname, MRA from the name, 80 the year, A for January, 01 the day, H501 the code of Rome and U the check character. Our Italian methodology page, Come calcoliamo il codice fiscale, documents the algorithm step by step, with the official tables and the automatic tests the engine passes.

Watch out for homocody

Because the code is derived from personal details, two different people can generate the same result — for example namesakes born on the same day in the same town. This is homocody (omocodia): the Agenzia delle Entrate makes each code unique by replacing some digits with letters under a dedicated table. A calculated code, however faithful to the rules, can therefore differ from the official one. If you need the code for an important act, always compare it with the one on your health card or certificate of attribution — and read our English guide to getting the codice fiscale for the official routes.

Frequently asked questions

Is the code from this calculator the official one?

No. The calculation follows the official rules (Ministerial Decree of 12 March 1974) and in the great majority of cases matches the assigned code, but the legally valid codice fiscale is only the one issued by the Agenzia delle Entrate. Use this tool as a fast, reliable preview — and the assigned code for anything official.

What is homocody (omocodia)?

Homocody occurs when two people with identical or very similar personal details would generate the same code. The Agenzia delle Entrate then varies the code — replacing some digits with letters under an official table — to make it unique. That is why an assigned code can differ from the calculated one if a near namesake shares your birth date and birthplace.

How does the calculator handle births outside Italy?

The name and date rules are identical. Only the place-of-birth part changes: instead of an Italian town (comune) code, the code of the foreign country is used — always starting with the letter Z (for example Z110 for France, Z404 for the United States). Type your country of birth into the place field and select it from the list.

Is my data stored when I use the calculator?

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser, on your device: surname, name and date of birth are never sent to a server and never stored. Close the page and no trace remains.

Why is 40 added to the day of birth for women?

It is a rule of the coding system: to mark sex without using an extra character, 40 is added to the day of birth for women. A woman born on 15 March therefore has 55 (15 + 40) in her code instead of the plain day.
